Buyer's Guide

😴 Best Sleep Masks for Shift Workers

A good sleep mask is cheaper and more portable than a blackout blind. For hotel stays, sleeping before a night shift, or blocking light during transit, a quality mask is one of the most cost-effective tools a shift worker can carry. The problem is most masks sit on your eyes (uncomfortable for side sleepers), don't block light at the nose bridge, or are built from cheap elastic that breaks within months.

What to look for

1
Zero light bleed at the nose bridge

The nose bridge is where nearly all cheap masks fail. The mask needs to contour to the face at the bottom without being so tight it causes pressure. Moulded eye cavities (like Manta Sleep) and adjustable nose bridge designs both work — flat fabric masks rarely do.

2
Side-sleeper friendly

The majority of adults sleep on their side. Standard masks with foam cups or padding tend to dislodge or press uncomfortably when you roll over. Adjustable straps and flexible cups that don't create pressure points are essential.

3
No eye pressure

Masks that press on your eyelids can cause eye strain and interrupt REM cycles. Moulded cavity designs that give your eyes a dark space to move in are significantly better for long sleep sessions.

4
Breathable material

Polyester satin feels silky but traps heat. Cotton or bamboo-fabric masks are more breathable — particularly important for daytime sleeping in warmer months.

5
Adjustable fit

A mask that's too tight causes headaches. Too loose slides off when you move. Look for easily adjustable velcro or buckle straps over fixed elastic loops.
