Editorial Policy
OffShift is written by Gary, a night shift worker based in Glasgow with 9 years of shift work experience. Every article and tool on this site is informed by that first-hand experience alongside published research.
How we research content
Every article is built around published evidence. Primary sources include peer-reviewed journals (Sleep Medicine, Chronobiology International, Occupational and Environmental Medicine), NHS guidance, NICE guidelines, HSE publications, and ACAS resources. Where statistics are used, sources are linked directly in the text or listed at the bottom of the article.
Content reflects the balance of evidence, not cherry-picked findings. Language like "research suggests" and "evidence indicates" is used deliberately — shift worker health research is ongoing and not every finding is definitive.
Who writes OffShift content
Core editorial — guides, articles, and tool explanations — is written by Gary. Personal essays and first-person accounts from the /stories section are contributed by named shift workers under their own bylines. No content is published anonymously or under a generic "OffShift Team" byline.
Medical review
Health articles covering clinical topics (diagnosis, treatment, medication, specific medical conditions) are submitted for review by a named medical professional before publication. Reviewed articles carry a "Medically reviewed by [name], [credentials]" byline. Articles not yet reviewed carry the standard author byline only.
See our medical reviewers page for details of who reviews content and their qualifications.
How we handle updates
Articles display a "Last updated" date. When research changes or new NHS guidance is published, affected articles are reviewed and updated. The corrections process is documented on our corrections policy page.
What OffShift is not
OffShift is not a medical service. Content is for informational and educational purposes only. If you have a health concern, speak to your GP. If you are in crisis, contact Samaritans (116 123, free, 24/7).
